Born in London in 1980 to an Italian mother and American father, Alexander Atwater describes his work as arising from a desire to study the world and in the process capture images which reflect the sublime and occasionally abstract nature of reality.
A self taught photographer he began his career traveling in the Middle East assisting documentary photographer Alan Gignoux. The success of the resulting photographs and subsequent exhibitions encouraged him to continue documenting the world in his own vision. As a photographer he is self-taught, though he credits an internship at Magnum photos as invaluable in developing his eye. His images have been widely published and his photographs are in numerous private collections.
The series of nude photographs was taken in western New England between 2006 and 2007. The interplay of shadows, ripples and reflections create images with a timeless almost classical quality. Reminiscent of Victorian photographs.
